Most recent research has determined that although the majority of the population has quit smoking, many parts of the country that are low-income have not.
In Salisbury Maryland, legislation has been passed that bans smoking and vaping in all Salisbury parks, playgrounds, and other public places. Not only is a ban being put in place, but there will also be strict enforcement of fines for those in violation of the ban. The ordinance could result in a fine of up to $500, with each repeat offense likely resulting in a $1,000 fine.
On Friday, July 28, 2017, the FDA announced that it intends to pursue regulations to significantly lower nicotine levels in cigarettes to reduce their addictive properties. These policy measures would likely lower the burden of tobacco-related disease and death, and prevent millions of teens and young adults from becomming addicted.

The Washington Post recently published an article titled "America’s new tobacco crisis: The rich stopped smoking, the poor didn’t" on tobacco use disparities among the poor. Although the national smoking rate is at about 15%, the smoking rate among individuals with a high school diploma is 40%.
UPDATE: In December 2016 the FDA removed its previous Boxed Warning concerning mental health side effects from both Chantix and Zyban labels. Patients should still be monitored from their health care prescriber. FDA reports clearly that taking medication to stop smoking outweighs possible side effects.
