Almost Half of Lung Cancer Patients Still Smoked After Surgery

An article published on MedPage Today details that, even though smoking cessation is recommended at least 4 weeks prior to surgery, nearly half of lung cancer patients continued smoking post-surgery. Specifically, in a retrospective study reported at CHEST 2021, the American College of Chest Physicians annual meeting, of the nearly 7,500 patients in the VA health system who were listed as current or former smokers just before undergoing surgery for stage I lung cancer, roughly 45% were still smoking -- or smoking again -- a year later.
